“In The Shadows” Documentary Short Film
Co-Director
Film + Social
A short film developed through the Belcourt Theatre’s Words Caught in My Throat Film Seminar, created for Black seventh- and eighth-grade girls in partnership with Metro Nashville Public Schools’ Office of Restorative Practices.
As Co-Director, I collaborated with Producer and Co-Director Meleisha Edwards to guide students through a process of viewing, discussion, and creative writing centered on Black female identity. Through poetry and reflection, participants explored moments in which they felt silenced or unseen. Their original poems form the foundation of In the Shadows, a first-person film shaped by the girls’ own voices.
The resulting work offers a poignant and intimate portrait of middle school girls navigating identity, visibility, and self-expression—stepping out of the shadows to be heard on their own terms.
